Dear Digestion Sufferer,

I know this is not a topic you would bring up in general conversation, but it has to be said: the digestive system is the cornerstone to good health, and without fully functioning healthy digestion, nothing else in the body works properly.

The digestive system plays an extremely important role in our overall health, but most people would rather put their heads in the sand when they have a problem in that area, because it is something that they just don’t feel comfortable talking about, even with their doctor or naturopath.

So they ignore it – they avoid certain foods, they carry antacids in their pocket, they take laxatives every day, loosen their belt three notches after a meal because of the bloating, and make sure they never run out of air freshener in the bathroom!

But Life Doesn’t Have To Be That Way!

There are answers to all of these problems and more.

We might have a bit of a laugh about these troubles, but they aren’t a joking matter. These symptoms can be indicators of more serious health issues, and if they’re not treated, or if they’re just covered up by band-aid type medication which doesn’t fix the problem, then down the track some fairly critical health issues can develop. (I’ll go into some of these in a minute…)

There is a test though, that is simple, non-invasive and affordable; one that you can do in the comfort and privacy of your own home. A test your doctor is NOT even likely to know about, let alone order for you, that can provide you with a such a comprehensive investigation of your whole digestive tract, you will be blown away with the amount of information it contains.

But Let’s Back Up A Bit First…

Who would be looking for answers by doing this type of test?

In my experience, I usually find that there are three groups of people searching for these type of in depth answers.

1. Ignorance is Bliss – Isn’t It?

The first group have some type of digestive problem but they haven’t seen anyone about it yet. It may not be bad enough for them to seek help, or it could be just be something they have avoided looking into because of the private nature of the issue – either way this is probably the first time they have realised that there may be an easy way to find a solution.

{Of course this test does not replace getting the advice of a qualified medical practitioner if necessary – but the knowledge contained in the results of this test will be of invaluable assistance).

2. Please Help Me!

The second group quite clearly have a digestive problem that is disrupting their life and their health, and they have already sought medical and / or naturopathic advice. Sometimes there has been a diagnosis of Coeliac disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s Disease; but at other times there has been no conclusion at all.

They may have had medical investigations such as blood tests, stool tests, breath tests, an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (a thin flexible tube fitted with a camera and passed down the throat to examine the oesophagus, stomach and small intestine), or a colonoscopy which examines the lining of the large bowel.

If they have seen a naturopath, then chances are they have done any number of herbal cleanses, taken all sorts of supplements and remedies to heal their gut, and loaded up on endless probiotic powders. They may have altered their diet, gone on a fast, and some people may have even had colonic irrigation!

But even after following ALL of the medical and naturopathic advice to the letter, there are many people who are still no closer to finding out what is wrong with their digestive system, and what it will take to get rid of the problem. Sometimes the treatments and medications they have taken have made them even worse, and this has left them frustrated, angry and feeling like no-one can help.

For these people, I can assure them that there IS another way.

3. I Would Never Have Even Known…

The third group of people don’t even know that the cause of their disease could be coming from their bowel.

Auto-immune diseases like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus and many others, can have a trigger stemming from an unhealthy bowel, as can other types of arthritis, allergies, skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis, sinus problems, chronic headaches, and immune dysfunction. One very serious auto-immune disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis has been closely linked with a bad bacteria found in the bowel.

In any of these conditions, it is the bowel that needs healing first, before we go in to treat the disease.

Why is our digestive tract so important?“, you might ask…

Why Is Digestion So Important?

Every cell in our body is made up of the building blocks we obtain from our food – the proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

Every function in our body, every system, depends on having sufficient quantities of these essential factors available for the body to use. Being able to break down our food and absorb these nutrients is crucial to our health and well-being.

With our degraded food supply containing less vital nutrients than it did a century ago, the eating of processed and packaged food that is stripped of its vitamin and mineral content, the stress we live under and the pollution we are exposed to – means that we have an even higher need for good nutrition than we had in the past. To be able to absorb what we need though, we have to have a healthy digestive system.

How Do I Know
What Is Healthy and Normal?

Everyone is different but if you have had the same pattern of bowel movements over a long period of time, then you will call that “normal” for you.

However normal for you, does not necessarily mean “healthy”. I have heard many people describe their bowel movements as “normal”, but with further questioning I find out that they are anything but! Even though it is not the most pleasant of subjects, here is a list of things that are not normal: (If this makes you feel ill, quickly skip this bit!)

  • Infrequent bowel movements; less frequent than once or twice a day (like every few days or even once a week) is not healthy!
  • Bowel movements that are difficult to pass;
  • Bowel movements that are often loose, or alternating between being formed one day and loose the next;
  • Chronic diarrhoea;
  • Constipation;
  • Transit times of longer than 24 hours;
  • Excessive gas and bad odour;
  • Very long thin stools;
  • Sticky or discoloured stools;
  • Undigested food in the stool;
  • Bloating, burping, gas, indigestion, heartburn, reflux, cramps, or pain.

Digestion should normally be a process that we hardly even notice. We shouldn’t bloat or have much gas, we should go to the toilet quickly and easily twice daily, the stool should be soft and well formed with very little odour and break up easily upon flushing the toilet.

That was something you always wanted to know wasn’t it?.

Grossed out yet? OK, let’s move on…

There Are Other Symptoms…

At times there might not be any overt digestive symptoms at all, but we can tell there is a digestive disorder because of some other signs that are showing up. These can include:

  • Weak, peeling or cracked fingernails;
  • Thinning hair;
  • Nausea;
  • Dry skin and skin conditions;
  • Itchy anus;
  • Weakened immune system (lots of colds and flu’s);
  • Sugar cravings;
  • Anaemia (iron deficiency);
  • Bad breath;
  • Weight loss;

We can measure numerous critical digestive functions – and much more – perfectly with Digestion Health testing.

It All Starts In The Stomach…

Well, that’s not entirely true – digestion actually starts with the brain, when we look at food, smell it, think about it and first taste it.

That process triggers our salivary glands to make saliva ready to start the digestive process in the mouth. We should chew our food well, breaking it down as much as possible before swallowing, which moves the food down our oesophagus to the all important stomach…

digestionhealth_stomach

Our stomach is where a lot of the digestive processes really get started. In a healthy stomach there should be a pool of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and other enzymes ready to start turning the food into a semi-liquid state. HCl and an enzyme called pepsin break down proteins; intrinsic factor aids the absorption of vitamin B12, and gastric lipase helps with the digestion of fats.

The stomach mixes the saliva, food and these gastric juices until it is all liquefied and ready to move into the small intestine, where further digestion and the absorption of all the nutrients takes place.

In an ideal situation this happens naturally and smoothly so that we are barely aware of the intricate processes taking place. However when things aren’t working properly, we soon know about it! And then, of course, there is…

The Stress Factor!

Stress can have a huge impact on the way we digest our food, and can all but stop the supply of acid in our stomach. Our body is very clever, but it cannot deal with stress AND perform good digestion all at the same time. It assumes that the stressful situation needs all its energy and resources – so it puts the digestive system on hold until after the stress has passed. The only problem is that nowadays we live with enormous stress all day every day, and our digestive system is permanently on hold!

When do we ever stop stressing and digest our food properly?

If we are not producing good quantities of acid in our stomach, due to stress, dehydration, nutrient deficiencies or even just natural aging; the food cannot move out of the stomach and into the intestines until it is pretty much liquid, so the food will sit and churn in the stomach mixed with the small amount of acid that is available, and it can then start to ferment.

Gas is produced as a by-product of this fermentation, and the stomach can swell and bloat leaving you feeling very heavy and uncomfortable. You could start burping, and notice the food “repeating” on you. If the pressure is great, the acidic food can push against the opening to the oesophagus and cause the pain and burning we call indigestion or heartburn. More often than not this is a symptom of too low acid not too high!

Let me repeat that one for you once again…

Low Acid Is A More Common Cause
of Heartburn Than Too High!

I can guarantee that your doctor likely didn’t know about that one, and if you have ever gone to your doctor complaining of heartburn you probably walked out with a prescription for antacid medication. But if low acid is already your problem, then antacid medication will make the condition worse, not better, in the long run.

And there are other very serious problems with having too low stomach acid as well.

  • Poor mineral and protein absorption. Low mineral absorption can lead to nutrient deficiency states and can even lead to conditions such as oesteoporosis.
  • With low acid, undigested food can move into the intestines where it creates a breeding ground for parasites, bad bacteria, yeasts and fungi which can all damage the lining of the bowel.
  • Undigested protein creates toxic by-products that have been linked to bowel cancer.
  • Damage to the lining of the digestive tract can lead to leaky gut, where large food particles and toxins enter the bloodstream and can cause immune reactions, overload the liver and cause many chronic symptoms.
  • Stomach acid is a trigger for the pancreas to produce digestive enzymes and for the liver to produce bile. Without the initial trigger, the other organs of digestion fail to produce enough of their secretions which further compromises the digestion and absorption of our nutrients.

All of these problems can lead to severe health disorders and are intensified when you are taking antacid medication. Antacids are dangerous medications that should only ever be used for very short term relief while the underlying cause of the problem is corrected.

Stomach acid is one of the important area I assess in the remarkable testing process I will be telling you more about shortly.

Antibiotic Anarchy…

With the prolific use of antibiotics for various ailments, many of us have had had several courses of antibiotics over our lifetime. Antibiotic translates to “anti-life” and the colonies of good bacteria living in our large bowel are the ones that suffer when we use antibiotics to kill other “bad” bacteria in our body.

We have millions of good bacteria in our digestive tract that can weigh up to a couple of kilos. They line our large colon and are part of our immune system, defending against pathogens (nasties for the rest of us) from entering the blood stream. They assist in the production of some B vitamins and vitamin K, protect the lining of the bowel from damage, and ferment dietary fibre to produce energy for the cells in the bowel wall.

There is one certain type of good bacteria that we need in the bowel, and if it is missing, we are much more susceptible to the development of depression.

These good bacteria are very sensitive to problems in the digestive tract and they can be affected by imbalances in the pH level; by parasites, bad bacterias and yeast growth such as candida; stress can harm them; toxic waste products from undigested food, and drugs such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, pain killers and steroid medication can also kill off a healthy colony.

It can be very beneficial to know whether you have a healthy bacteria colony in the bowel, and if there are any strains of bacteria that are in low levels or completely missing. I have known patients to have taken Acidophilus capsules for years thinking they were doing the right thing, but when we checked their levels of bowel bacteria, it was a different strain, Bifidus, that was in very low numbers and needed replacing.

Sometimes we can take high dose probiotic powders, but because the whole ecology of the gut is wrong, they never adhere to the lining of the bowel and pass straight through.

Just taking these probiotic supplements does not guarantee they are doing the job they are meant to.

Unless we do comprehensive testing, we will never know exactly how our friendly bowel flora colonies are going.

How Do I Know
If I Have Any Of These Problems?

Ok, this is where the test that I have been talking about comes in.

One of the essential tools that I use when I am evaluating a health problem that I know has a digestive component, is a test called a Complete Digestive Stool Analysis. It is the most comprehensive analysis of the function and state of the whole digestive tract that I am aware of, and it gives me so much information, that I then know exactly what to do to help restore this person’s gut back into tip top shape.

So much of what is measured in this wide-ranging test, we just couldn’t find out in any other way.
Some of the areas that are covered in the test include:
  • Whether you are breaking down fats, proteins and carbohydrates properly
  • Whether there are food remnants and meat or vegetable fibres not being digested
  • What the pH level of the bowel is
  • Whether there are indications of low stomach acid
  • Whether there are toxins from undigested protein putrefying in the bowel
  • Whether the liver and pancreas are working to the best of their capacity
  • Whether there is enough energy in the bowel to ensure a normal transit time
  • Whether there are markers for bowel cancer risk
  • Whether there is any blood, pus, mucous, or inflammation in the bowel
  • Whether there are any parasites, bad bacteria, fungi or yeast in the bowel
  • Whether the levels of good bacteria are present and in healthy numbers

All of that information may not mean all that much to you – but to a naturopath who has studied these tests in depth, and has helped many people regain their health by addressing the imbalances that show up – I can tell you that every single marker gives me one more piece of the puzzle, that once put together, can give me the total picture of your health.

So How Do I Do This Test?

Ok, so here is the nitty gritty. We can’t discuss digestion and bowel health without eventually talking about your poop. Sorry, but that’s just the way it is.

I know you’re probably cringing right now, so we’ll be politically correct and call it a “stool” but in the end this test is a very comprehensive stool test and there’s no getting around it.

I can assure you though, that it’s just not that bad. The test is very easy to do, it comes with very clear instructions, you complete it at home and it is all very private and discreet. Don’t forget to read the blog post “Poop Testing 101 or 7 Steps to Better Poop Collections” by Embracing Health Naturopath Rhianna Smith.

Ok, now that you know this type of test is available, and we’ve touched on a just a small part of the enormous amount of information it can give you about your health, the next thing is how you go about ordering it for yourself, so you too, can benefit from the quality data it provides.

Order This From Your Doctor?

One very important thing you need to be aware of is that although your local doctor or naturopath can probably order this test for you – they are not likely to be able to interpret the results for you properly. You may end up with a pretty coloured report in your hand, with numbers on it that mean nothing to you, and probably mean next to nothing to your doctor either. (See below)

digestionhealthpicture1

What you want is someone who has analysed hundreds of these tests, and is so experienced with understanding the health implications and patterns found in the numbers, that she is in demand from doctors and naturopaths around the country to teach them how to properly interpret the results.

And that person is me.

I have analysed hundreds of these reports for patients personally, and I have studied digestive health vigorously, reading hundreds of books, attending intensive digestion related seminars, and studied the relationship between digestive dysfunction and all the different health disorders that can come from that.

Recently, I was hired by Healthscope Laboratories (previously ARL Functional Pathology) to lecture to doctors and naturopaths around the country and present them with expert tuition on the understanding, interpretation and analysis of the Complete Digestive Stool Analysis Test results, and how to apply that knowledge to develop strategies for healing.

Not only that, as an experienced naturopath running cutting edge detox & health retreats, I can guide you through the many options available to people to correct their digestive dysfunctions naturally.

It’s not enough to just have access to information – you need to know what that information means. Without the right analysis, your tests could be a total waste of time, effort and money.

By now you must be wondering… How do I do this?

Your doctor certainly won’t put the time and energy into educating you about your health, your naturopath probably hasn’t specialised in digestion, and if you do find someone knowledgeable about these tests, they are probably booked up way in advance, cost hundreds of dollars to see, and don’t have the time to answer all your questions.

My report takes you step by step through your results and your half hour review will ensure you will have all the information you need. Your report is laid out in an easy to understand, straightforward way that answers your questions as we go, but remember our naturopath is also there for further clarification, if need be. We help you to recognise why you feel the way you do, and what simple steps you can take to improve your health.

If you are finally ready to get some REAL answers, then here is what you do:

When you click on the order button below, you will be taken to a page where you enter your details to order your Complete Digestive Stool Analysis Test Kit which includes my Comprehensive Report on your results and your 15 minute phone consultation.

Remember not to exit the site after you have paid as you will be automatically taken to a  page to fill in a short questionnaire which will give me more information about your health concerns.

Once you finish ordering the tests online, within a couple of days you will receive the test kit at your home address. Full instructions on how to do the test are inlcuded with the kit (and for a humourous take on sample collection, don’t miss this blog post).

When you have completed the samples, they are couriered back to Healthscope Functional Pathology in the box and packaging provided, and it takes about two to three weeks for them to process your tests. Then I receive your results and depending on the volume of tests I have to analyse, you will receive your full PDF report within one to two weeks after that. So the full process is most likely to take 3-6 weeks.

Now that you know exactly how to obtain this essential information, the rest is entirely up to you.

You basically have 3 choices:

  • You could do nothing right now, but at least you have the knowledge that this type of testing is available and if you do get sick, you can then kick yourself for not doing something that could have prevented your illness. Or maybe you could keep doing the rounds of doctors, specialists, gastroenterologists and naturopath’s – spending thousands of dollars and having test after useless test that gets you nowhere.

Or maybe…

  • You can go to your local doctor and get them to order the stool test for you and you will get some results, but you won’t know what to do with them.
If you choose any of those options, let’s at least part as friends and let me give you some free health information that will keep us in touch, and you can still benefit from my health tips and principles. (See below)

Or…

  • You can click on the order button below and do what it takes to look after number one by looking after your number two’s, and receive your own personalised, individual report and consultation that could have far reaching implications for your health for the rest of you life. So now my question to you is….

Which Is It To Be?

I now invite you to order with confidence here below:

YES! I am ready to take responsibility for my own health!

I have read the above segment that details the order process and I understand that it may take 3-6 weeks, depending on lead-times at the lab processing the stool test, until I get the final report. I also know that I will have to fill in a short, quick questionnaire so my comprehensive analysis report can address my personal concerns about my health. On that basis, I would like to:
